The Wilmington Senior Center's Comprehensive Services Department provides a wide range of social, therapeutic and wellness services to seniors and their families. These services help sustain and enrich the lives of older adults, often enabling them to remain in their own homes and to enjoy "the golden years".

   SUPPORT SERVICES

Senior Center Membership
In order to benefit fully from our programs and activities, adults ages 50 and older can join the Wilmington Senior Center for only $15.00 per year. A membership application is available from our receptionist. A volunteer Members Council helps staff plan support and recreational activities on behalf of the membership.

Noon Meal Program
Meal TimeA hot, nutritious meal is served at noon each weekday in our bright and cheerful dining room. The meals are provided through the City Fare Nutrition Program and are subsidized by Title III of the Older Americans Act. A donation of $1.50 per meal is suggested for people ages 60 and older and $4.00 for people under age 60. RESERVATIONS ARE NEEDED and may be made by calling 651-3400.

Homebound Meal Delivery
Meals are delivered each weekday by volunteers and employees to homebound individuals. Arrangements for homebound meal delivery can be made by calling the City Fare Nutrition Program at 421-3734.

Exercise and Wellness Programs
Exercise classes are offered several days each week and a new fitness center is being developed. The center also sponsors weekly trips for swimming and bowling. Regular programs on health and wellness topics such as arthritis, cancer screening, personal safety and stress management are provided. In addition, the center sponsors a Diabetes Support Group, nutrition assessments, blood pressure monitoring and flu shots. See calendar for schedule of events.

Information and Referral
our Lunch Staff Information about community resources are available from all support staff members. Referrals to other agencies for services are made on an as needed basis. Check the Links page for suggested web sites where useful information can be found.

Transportation
WSC busThe center owns and operates an 18 passenger white and blue bus. The bus is wheelchair accessible. Transportation to and from the center is available daily for a modest fee. When possible, transportation to medical appointments can be arranged. Grocery shopping is also offered periodically.

Housing
Seniors at risk of losing their housing can obtain counseling and support through the Samaritan Outreach Center, a collaborative service with the Ministry of Caring located at 1410 North Claymont Street in Wilmington. The Wilmington Senior Center's outreach worker, Noris Perdomo, can be reached by calling 594-9476.

   RECREATION SERVICES

The Wilmington Senior Center sponsors a wide variety of fun and enriching activities that give older adults a chance to enjoy the adventures of living in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Enrichment classes and activities include:

  • Computer - Ceramics - Sewing
  • Quilting - Crochet - Bible Study
  • Water Color Painting - Arts and Crafts - Flower Arranging
Computer classes

Trips to local areas of interest are offered at least once each week. These trips take participants to places such as Atlantic City, Three Little Bakers dinner theater, Cowtown, mall shopping and Sight and Sound extravaganzas. Overnight trips are also coordinated once or twice each year.

Social activities and parties, including a monthly birthday celebration on the last Wednesday of the month, are also great fun! Entertainment is provided by senior center members, staff and community volunteers. Bingo is played every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Dining Room.

Volunteers are always welcome (and at times needed) to help with activities and programs!
